2 Teens cleared off murder and wounding with intent charge, guilty of rioting

The 1st and 2nd Defendants (the “Defendants”), aged 19 and 18 respectively, were initially facing three charges of murder, wounding with intent and riot in relation to the incident in Sheung Shui in November 2019. The Defendants have been on remand since their arrest in December 2019.

Both Defendants had pleaded not guilty to all charges. Upon the halftime submissions by the Counsel for Defendents, the Honourable Madam Justice E Toh ruled that there is no case to answer for the murder charge, and amended the charge to manslaughter.

After trial, the Jury returned the following verdict:

Against the 1st Defendant: 

Manslaughter: Unanimously acquitted

Wounding with intent: Acquitted on 6:1

Riot: Convicted on 5:2

Against the 2nd Defendant: 

Manslaughter: Unanimously acquitted

Wounding with intent: Acquitted on 5:2

Riot: Convicted on 6:1
