Coroner’s Inquest on the fatal incident of a 14-year old boy at Hong Kiu Home

On 23 August 2016, the Deceased, a 14-year-old boy who was mentally handicapped, fell from a 3rd Floor window of Hong Kiu Home (康橋之家), a care home for mentally handicapped persons. A Coroner’s Inquest was conducted on 27 April 2021 – 3May 2021.  Ho Tse Wai & Partners represented the mother of the Deceased, a properly interested person to the Inquest.

On 4 May 2021, after a 5-day hearing, the Coroner directed to jury to determine whether the Deceased died from an accident or to give an open verdict.  After deliberation, the jury found the fatal incident to be an accident and gave several recommendations to care homes, the Social Welfare Department and the Labour and Welfare Bureau.
